Innovative 100% Fossil-Free Solutions in Córdoba

WEDISTRICT Partners unveil technical installations on renewable district heating and cooling networks

Córdoba, Spain, 24 September 2024. 21 partners from across Europe will meet on Wednesday, 25 September 2024, in Córdoba for the final event of the European Union-funded WEDISTRICT project. Together they visit the demonstration site, which is located on the Rabanales Campus of the University of Córdoba, where WEDISTRICT has developed a cutting-edge renewable district heating and cooling network.

“The new DHC demo installation at UCO serves as a “living lab” for industrial engineering students, offering hands-on experience with real installations that provide renewable air conditioning services”, says Prof Dr Manuel Ruiz de Adana, Scientific Lead of the WEDISTRICT project in Córdoba, about the demonstration site on Rabanales Campus.

WEDISTRICT is an EU-funded project that aims to demonstrate innovative 100% fossil free heating and cooling solutions for new and existing district heating and cooling systems. These solutions will integrate

  • Multiple renewable energy sources, including excess heat from data centres,
  • Advanced thermal storage technologies, enabling the redistribution of heat to buildings when required,
  • Smart technologies to increase operational efficiency and sustainability of the systems.

The project’s innovative solutions have been implemented through three real-scale demonstration sites located in Spain, Romania, and Sweden. These sites aim to provide best practices that can be replicated across various climate zones and building types, offering a comprehensive approach to decarbonising the heating and cooling sector across Europe.

Press Conference Details

A press conference will be held on 25 September 2024 to present the technical installation of the WEDISTRICT project in Córdoba. The event will take place at the Sala de Prensa del Rectorado starting at 9:30 a.m.

Key speakers will include:

  • Manuel Torralbo, Rector of the University of Córdoba, who will open the event.
  • Prof Dr Manuel Ruiz de Adana, Scientific Lead of the WEDISTRICT project in Córdoba, who will explain the project’s significance for the university, including the €2.5 million investment in renewable climate control solutions for the Da Vinci and Monte Cronos buildings on campus.
  • Dr Amanda Penélope García Marín, Vice-Rector of Sustainable Campus, University of Córdoba, who will speak on the broader impact of the WEDISTRICT project for the university, including future scalability and the potential for campus-wide decarbonisation.

The event will also feature a 6-minute video presentation highlighting the installation on the Rabanales Campus.

Why WEDISTRICT Matters
The WEDISTRICT project is a unique opportunity for Europe to lead in developing sustainable energy solutions, particularly in the heating and cooling sectors, which are crucial to meeting the EU’s carbon reduction targets. By harnessing renewable energy, advanced thermal storage, and smart systems, WEDISTRICT showcases how large-scale decarbonisation can be achieved in different environments.

The University of Córdoba is proud to host this cutting-edge installation, which will not only decarbonise buildings on its campus but also serve as a blueprint for similar projects across Europe. The project positions the university as a leader in sustainable innovation in Southern Europe.
